Acrylic nails have been around longer and  consequently are still more popular than gel nails. Acrylic nails consist of a two-part process involving a liquid and a powder (a monomer and polymer). When these are mixed together, they form into a thick substance that is used to apply tips and colors to natural nails.
Gel nails have also been available for some time and are made with a gel acrylic. They are natural-looking and become beautiful enhancements to the real nails.
Acrylic nails and gel perform the same purpose in that they can lengthen short nails, strengthen nails, and add a polished, finished look to your hands. So what is the best choice for you? You local nail technician would be able to help you but here are some points to consider. You can paint either type of nail which may look better on gel nails as they are shinier. You can also put French tips on both types of nails.
So what are the advantages of Acrylic Nails? They are generally easy to fix temporarily yourself if you break one. Acrylic nails are robust and when applied correctly can last a long time. The main disadvantages are that they can look very fake if not applied correctly and they also can be hard to grow out. They can do more damage to your natural nails than the gel nails.
Some advantages of Gel Nails are that they tend to look glossier and more natural compared to other types of artificial nails. The nail mixes are odorless and they are easier and quicker to apply. Conversely, gel nails tend not to last as long as acrylic nails despite being a more expensive process. Gel nails can be harder to apply yourself so you may have to always get them done professionally. Unfortunately, when a gel nail breaks it is not so easy to do a temporary fix as they tend to shatter rather than do a clean break.
