Apple update tax - Apple does not lower price (rarely) on the model cycles, making it out of sync (read: more expensive) against component and competitor prices towards end of cycle
This is in part offset by the ridiculously high prices of used MacPros. Unparalleled by any other computer. A two year old Nehalem base spec still goes for close to $2000. Nearly 80% of original retail value.
But yeah, the single CPU model is horribly expensive. There is no reason why it can't be priced at $1999

I want it in late June, early July at the most. This Autumn rumor is really peeing me off. Think I may even queue up for this one. Actually I won't. There'll be local press at the Apple Store and the last thing I need is to be caught on film standing in line like a total douche with a bunch of other douches!

As ProRes is lossy compression, you're actually suffering one more generation loss by transcoding to it first. But in the real world you're not losing anything worth keeping. Just make sure you set your render codec to ProRes.
That's the key, like editing 'native' hdv with pro res as the render codec. I'd be happy enough editing avchd like that just to avoid the multiple jigabyte files on ingestion.

You can't drop the price and maintain the quality, champ...
Gordon Moore would probably beg to differ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore's_law). By the time Merom is out the current Yonah processors should become cheap enough to allow a $100-$200 price drop for a Mac mini.
The $900 iMac really is an institutional product, not aimed at personal users. Personally I think it'd work well as a corporate product too, if Apple could actually start selling to corporate customers.
It would work quite well as a secondary Mac in a multi-Mac family too...

This is getting exciting.
and boring. seems like we've been hearing about Apple's potential (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/18/apples-north-carolina-data-center-to-focus-on-cloud-computing/) cloud-based this-and-that for ages. Hope something actually launches before 2012 (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/07/20/apples-massive-north-carolina-data-center-ready-by-end-of-year/).

This just in: orders will ship in the order they were received despite the 4-5 vs. 3-4 week estimates. Meaning, if you ordered an iPad 2 yesterday & received a 4-5 week ship estimate, you will get yours before someone who just now ordered one and received a 3-4 week estimate.
This also just in: estimates are not exact.

But there is a statutory transgression. It is now illegal in France to go about in public dressed like chattel.
France is attempting to preserve their culture against corrupting outside influence. I don't have any problem with that.
would you have problems if they banned Islam from France?

They did this with the Nintendo DSi back in 2009.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5QSclrIdlE&feature=player_embedded
The game is available in the DSi Ware Store (called Looksley's Line Up). Its quite funny because the changing of the perspective will reveal the solutions to each diorama and the effect is done quite well.
Back then when Nintendo announced that their next iteration would feature 3d I just thought that they would implement this form of "pseudo" 3d in every game. The problem in real life: You only get the 3d effect when you move your head or your device - So its the totally opposite concept of the stereoscopic screens like in the 3ds or some new android phones where you can only see the effect when you look straight on the device! You have to experience both - Funny thing: You can download the DSi game on the 3DS and play it there and afterwards some 3DS 3d game to really get the idea how the two techniques behave in real life. Obviously both have their advantages!
What would be impressive is some combination of the two: "Real" 3D imaging like on the 3ds combined with headtracking..
EDIT: Some of the problems with Jonny Lees awesome concepts: You can only do it alone, the effect doesnt work if more people are staring at the tv, and it isnt possible with movies its only possible with real time rendered objects! As you can see the stadium at the end is totally flat, as opposed to how the stadium would look like with glasses and shot with a 3d camera.
But after getting my 3ds last week (together with PES 2011) I have to conclude that the 3d of the 3ds is better and more impressive even though my eyes start to hurt after playing for an hour or so..
Because they achieved this game with the DSi (133 Mhz ARM) I dont think that it taxes the cpu very much..

Oh stop whinning. You know deep down there were way to many people using the discount when they should not have been. The policy just falls back on what they previously did years ago with the discount. Dang, it wasn't long ago that you had to have it shipped to the school. Come on, look at what some university bookstores are doing now before you can buy Apple software at discount.
I don't blame them. It makes it tougher for those whom need the hardware but this has gone on long enough. It's three hundred flippin' USD, and you get enough upgrades for that. Suck it up and work a few hours of overtime for a couple weeks.
Good for you Apple! There is no need to explain.

Until they come out with an iPod with a widescreen display I don't see the point.
Because it's really easy to connect an iPod to your TV and watch your videos that way. There are also several peripherals (http://podophile.com/2006/07/26/memorex-announces-iflip-video-player-for-ipod/) coming out soon that add a larger wide screen to the iPod. And don't forget watching videos on your MacBook or MacBook pro.

Yet what those hackintosh prove is that Apple is charging a "Mac Pro tax" of around 1000$, +/- a few hundreds depending on configuration. Even if that tax was only 500$ +/- a few hundreds, the question remains: why?
It just proves you can put Mac OS X on cheaper hardware. Which is why so many people do it. People have put Mac OSX on netbooks, but obviously a netbook would never be considered a workstation class computer.
